Jane Lowey is a peacemaker and adventurer of both the inner and
outer worlds. Music is the medium on these journeys, and voice is the instrument.
She is passionate about building communities of people through
singing and joy-making and has been directing the "Common Voices Women's Chorus"
on Cape Cod since 1999.
Jane's passion for community music making, women and voice, came unexpectedly
after spending a week singing with Ysaye M. Barnwell . She is a member of the a cappella
quintet "Sweet Honey in the Rock". This gifted woman brought the treasures of the African American tradition to life,
with the living knowledge that EVERYONE can SING. Within the year, Jane began the women's chorus, and
began studying music formally herself.
As director of the "Common Voices" women's chorus, Jane often arranges
her own music. The songs she draws upon are as diverse as her life experience.
She has attended home births, worked in the corporate world of telecommunications,
worked with the dying, and performed weddings, funerals and other life rituals in her
capacity as chaplain in her community.
Jane is currently teaching weekend "SingShops" throughout the U.S., so that more women
can experience opening their voices, and finding joy in community.
Jane also organizes and leads groups of women in travel to diverse
cultures and continents. She has taken groups to Morocco and South
Africa, and is currently preparing for a trip to Ghana. These trips invite
the travelers into an experience of music, culture, and relationship, which
ultimately reveal to all involved, our common humanity.
What connects all Jane's work is the ability to move easily into many
worlds, and in so doing
she creates joyous circles of song, multi-cultural bridges, and confident voices.
